The Servant

By the standards of the world

A servant is a stain—

A dirty, ugly, lesser one

To use for our own gain.

To use but then to keep concealed:

“Your work is done, now go.

I’ll squeeze what I want out of you,

Then kick you to the road.”

By the standards of the King,

A servant is a jewel—

A bright and shining greater one

To join Him in His rule.

To join Him soon for all to see:

“Your work is done; now come.

Put down the heavy cross you held

To show yourself my son.”
